Clean-up
Tuesday, 27 April 2010 19:25

The Cave Hill is now a good deal cleaner because of our efforts on Saturday 8 May 2010. Seventeen members and friends lifted 25 bin-bags of rubbish from the hill. We concentrated on areas off the main tracks because Council employees keep these tracks fairly clean. We went instead to hidden areas where young people gather and leave a lot of rubbish behind them. We also sorted the rubbish we collected into various recyclable containers. It was a good day's work!

Cavehill Rights of Way case
Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:34

On Wednesday 17 February we launched John Gray's tract on the famous 1859 Rights of Way case. The picture shows John in full flow on the occasion.

The book is based on the famous case when Joseph Magill tried to block public access to Cave Hill and was defeated when he was taken to court. The case established the rights of access to Cave Hill and the account of the case throws up a lot of information about Cave Hill in the nineteenth century.

Friends of the Belfast Hills launch
Sunday, 06 September 2009 18:29
On 25 July the Friends of the Belfast Hills was launched at a very successful visit to the first cave. This cave is now about 4 metres off the ground and difficult of access. The Belfast Hills Partnership organised the construction of a staircase to allow as many people as possible to visit. Between 10.30 and 4 o'clock in the afternoon, 851 people of all ages took advantage of the occasion. Many said that they had not been there for many many years. It was also one of the few sunny warm days this summer and this added to the occasion. Cormac Hamill, chair of the Cave Hill Conservation Campaign along with Jim Bradley, Lizzy Pinkerton and Andrea McKernon from the Belfast Hills Partnership dressed in late Victorian costume to try to recreate a famous Victorian photograph of visitors to the caves.
